der could be a masterstroke, but wouldn’t be surprised if it took until the knockout stages of the World Cup for KP to master the role.
Pietersen made an uncharacteristically sluggish 39 from 61 balls against Holland in England’s six-wicket win over Holland on Tuesday.
Trescothick, England’s most prolific century maker in one-day cricket, is confident that despite the early teething problems the South Africa-born star will get to grips with the demands of his new job.
“I think it will take him time
to learn the role and we mustn’t panic if he makes a couple of low scores in these group games,” he told City PM
“If he can learn how to exploit the power plays then the way Andrew Strauss is playing at the other end England have got the makings of a very strong opening partnership.
“We’ve really got to give him a good couple of goes to just how it’s gone and not expect instant results. He’ll love the extra responsibility though and I know he’ll thrive on it.”
