Trent Bridge hero Bresnan fears he could be dropped
INDIA’S second innings slayer at Trent Bridge Tim Bresnan admits he could find himself relegated to 12th man duties by the time England attempt to wrap up the series at Edgbaston next week.
The Yorkshireman crowned a successful return to the side with Test best figures of 5 for 48 as England moved closer to their goal of becoming the No1 five-day team in the world following their 319-run victory.
But with Chris Tremlett likely to be fit by the time the two sides reconvene, Bresnan is aware that his Nottingham heroics, which also included a rapid fire 90 in England’s second dig, could count for nothing if coach Andy Flower decides to stick with a four-man attack.
He said: “If you’ve got a stable of bowlers to choose from then it is going to give the selectors a headache and that is not my problem and I don’t have to worry about that.
“It is going to be a tough decision. Someone is going to have to miss out and someone is going to be very disappointed, and I hope it is not me.”
If Flower sticks with four bowlers, as is his modus operandi, he will be forced to find a replacement for Jonathan Trott at No3 as the South African-born star is struggling with a shoulder injury.
In the audition to replace Trott, James Taylor, 21, outshone his main rival Ravi Bopara on the first day of the England Lions game against Sri Lanka A at Scarborough yesterday.
Bopara, who played the last of his 10 Tests almost two years ago to the day, was dismissed for 19, while the uncapped Taylor compiled an eye-catching 76.
