Tredwell hits Tigers for six
SPINNER James Tredwell staked his claim for an England Test place after impressing with a six-wicket haul on day one of the three-day warm-up match with Bangladesh A.
The Kent player returned figures of 6-95 in a mammoth spell of 28 overs as the hosts were bowled out for 202 in Chittagong.
But the gloss was taken off England’s performance as they slumped to 68-3 at stumps with Kevin Pietersen failing once again with the bat, scoring just two.
With the pitch at Chittagong likely to suit spin, Tredwell is pressing for a Test debut on Friday in a two-pronged attack with Graeme Swann.
And he wasn’t the only one to impress as Middlesex pace man Steven Finn took 2-13 off seven overs in his first taste of international action.
Indeed, but for Roqibul Hasan, England would have dismissed their hosts far more cheaply – the No4 smashing 15 fours and three sixes in an superb unbeaten 107.
The tourists weren’t quite so impressive with the bat, however, with another debutant, Hampshire’s Michael Carberry, scoring just five in his partnership with captain Alastair Cook, who himself fell for just 19.
But England concerns must surely be aimed at the worrying form of Pietersen, who again failed to muster much-needed runs on this tour. This time, he lasted just five balls before once again falling to a left-arm spinner, Mehrab Hossain, who had him caught at the wicket for two.
Jonathan Trott, whose place is under threat from Carberry, kept his cool to end the day unbeaten on 32, but England will have to make do without Paul Collingwood, who was rested with a slight shoulder injury.
