Q What is your trading background?

A I started trading equities nearly 30 years ago and then progressed to options then financial futures and then finally foreign exchange, which really resonated with me because it was much more macro-based.

Q What will you be covering in your session at City PM’s trading conference on 24 May?

A I will discuss day trading, which is my speciality. I am not very good at figuring out larger trends, but I am pretty good at understanding intra-day price action so I will discuss the finer points of doing battle with the market on a day-to-day basis.

Q Why is this important for traders?

A Conventional wisdom holds that day trading is riskier than holding for the long term – and done improperly that’s absolutely true. But if you approach the game systematically, then day trading can actually be less risky because you expose yourself to the market much less.

Q What is the most important lesson you have learned as a trader?

A Buy high and sell higher. Sell low and sell lower. Most people are incapable of doing that.

Q What are the most important tools a trader needs to have?

A A trader needs to understand the broader trend, the immediate news flow and absolute amount of risk in actual money terms that he or she is willing to assume.

Q What is the worst mistake a trader can make?

A Average down into a losing trade.

Q Why are you excited to be taking part in City PM’s trading conference?

A I think this is going to be an incredible event. I know many of the presenters personally and they are some of the top traders in the business, so attendees will have a unique opportunity to learn from the best.

Boris Schlossberg is speaking on Strategies for Day Trading at City PM’s one-day conference on 24 May from 3.30-4.20pm. He will also be on the Masters of Forex panel, with Richard Farleigh, John Hardy, head of FX strategy, Saxo Bank, and David Rodriguez, quantitative strategist, DailyFX.
