ARBUTUS
Michelin-starred yet affordable, Arbutus has come to symbolise London’s food revolution. The food is gourmet French but not pompous – think cod brandade and slow cooked lamb breast with potato puree.?The three course lunch for £16.95 is said to be the cheapest Michelin-starred menu in the world. 63-64 Frith Street, W1D 3JW, tel: 020 7734 4545.

BOCA DI LUPO
Another Italian tapas bar, this is a sleeker operation that Polpo, with a more grown-up dining area and better contained hustle and bustle.?Its excellenty judged fare from all over Italy has proved a great hit and the atmosphere is electric. Tagliatelle with pigeon and pork ragu, perfect caponata, and fried swordfish are all winners. 12 Archer Street, W1D 7BB, tel: 020 7734 2223.

HIX
Mark Hix’s new opening on Brewer Street is the talk of the town – not surprisingly, either, with the menu positively squeaking with innovative, immaculately sourced food. Examples are salt marsh mutton with kidney and oyster pie, Thornback ray with capers and sea purslan, and lobster and monk cheek curry. 66-70, Brewer Street, W1F 9TR, tel: 020 7292 3518.
