THREE OTHER MEAT-LOVERS’ HOTSPOTS

GAUCHO SMITHFIELD
Most people are familiar with Gaucho’s Argentine steaks and wine. The formula is so successful – a chain, but glamorous with a hint of the gourmet – that it’s expanding at a rate of knots. Now Gaucho has come to Charterhouse Street, adding to Farringdon’s thriving scene. For the unfamiliar, the beef and the extensive wine cellar are features, but there is a range of South American delights, from ceviche to empanadas. 93A Charterhouse Street, EC1M 6HL, tel: 020 7490 1676.

SMITHS OF SMITHFIELDS
There are three levels to the famous Smiths complex in Farringdon. The bottom is great for killer breakfast, drinks in the evening and a buzzy party atmosphere; the first floor is all about a laid back steak dinner with friends and the top floor (pictured) is a more refined affair with a good range of fish as well as steak. Smiths is famous for its beef but the wine makes the evening here, and the awesome desserts don’t hurt. 67-77 Charterhouse Street, EC1M 6HJ, tel: 020 7251 7950.

BYRON BURGERS
The “cool” burger stalwart has opened shop in Canary Wharf with a snazzy new outlet that offers brilliant burgers in all shapes and sizes – such as the ingenious “skinny” without the bun. Burgers are made from highland beef and buns are “artisinal” – baked fresh every morning. For those not after beef, there are nice chicken and veggie burgers and great sides such as deep fried courgette. Second Floor, Cabot Place East, Canary Wharf, E14 4QT, tel: 020 7715 9360.
