Theresa May’s Brexit deal is ‘doomed’, warns former defence secretary Michael Fallon

Former defence secretary Michael Fallon has said Theresa May's Brexit deal is "doomed" and must be negotiated.

Fallon, who resigned last year and wanted to remain in the EU, echoed Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is calling the deal the "worst of all worlds".

He told the BBC that it was "up to his colleagues" to decide if the Prime Minister should continue as leader in the event the deal was rejected by MPs when the vote on it on 11 December.

May is facing opposition on all fronts to her Brexit deal, which will see the UK commit to staying in the EU’s custom union until a trade deal that resolves the Irish border issue can be implemented.

A number of Tories have pledged to vote down the deal, as had the Labour party, the Lib Dems, the SNP and the party propping up May's minority government, the DUP.

May could clash with her opposite number Corbyn after she issued a call for him to take part in a televised debate on Brexit. Other parties have asked that they also be included in any head-to-head encounter.

There was opposition to May's deal from across the pond too, as Donald Trump said the withdrawal agreement "sounds like a great deal for the EU" that would prevent the UK from trading with the US.

Meanwhile, the European Court of Justice will today decide whether article 50, the mechanism that allowed the UK to withdraw from the bloc, can be reversed without the permission of the other 27 EU member states.
