LIAM TANCOCK claimed his second world record in 24 hours to win Britain’s second gold medal at the World Championships in Rome last night.

Tancock won the final of the 50m backstroke in a time of 24.04secs, beating the mark he set in his Saturday’s semi-final by 0.04secs.

It added to the gold medal won by Gemma Spofforth in the 100m backstroke and took Team GB’s tally in the pool to seven medals – their best-ever showing.

Loughborough swimmer Tancock said: “It is another world record and I’m thrilled to bits I’m world champion after two bronzes in previous world championships.”
