Strachan tipped to head south after quitting Celtic
GORDON STRACHAN was last night installed as the red-hot favourite to take charge of Sunderland after resigning as manager of Celtic.
The former Scotland midfielder was already in the frame to replace Ricky Sbragia at the Stadium of Light, but his odds were slashed after confirming the end of his four years in charge at Celtic Park.
Strachan struggled to win over fans despite leading the Hoops to the Scottish Premier League title in his first three years in charge. The ex-Southampton manager seemed set to make it four in a row, guiding Celtic to a seven-point lead by the season’s mid-point, but was pipped by Rangers and had to settle for League Cup success. Strachan’s final months were also soured by a dressing-room row with winger Aiden McGeady.
“Celtic is a special club, with special supporters,” said Strachan. “There is no club like it and it has been an absolute honour and privilege to be the club’s manager.”
Sbragia resigned on Sunday after Sunderland’s Premier League survival was confirmed, despite losing their final fixture at home to Chelsea.
