MAHELA JAYAWARDENE’S century inspired co-hosts Sri Lanka to a 210-run win over Canada in their opening game of the World Cup.

The Lions batted first and hit 332-7 off their 50 overs with Jayawardene and captain Kumar Sangakkara sharing a 179-run third-wicket stand.

In reply only Rizwan Cheema put up any resistance with a quick fire 37 as Canada were bowled out for 122.

In the other Group A game Hamish Bennett took 4-16 as New Zealand thrashed Kenya by 10 wickets. Tim Southee and Jacob Oram claimed three wickets each as the African side were bowled out for 69 in 23.5 overs after choosing to bat.

New Zealand needed only eight overs to knock off the runs, with Martin Guptill scoring an unbeaten 39.
