Gayle blows Aussies away
CRICKET: West Indies captain Chris Gayle smashed the fifth-fastest century in Test history to lead his side’s recovery in the third Test with Australia in Perth.

Gayle smashed 102 from just 70 balls as the Windies closed on 214-2 in response to Australia’s 520-7 declared.

It capped an incident-packed day which threatened to boil over when a clash between Suliemann Benn and Mitchell Johnson led to a war of words.

Erlandsson leads in South Africa
GOLF: Sweden’s Martin Erlandsson fired an eight-under-par 64 to take a one shot lead into the second day of the South African Open.

Erlandsson fired six birdies and an eagle to lead Spain’s Pablo Martin and home favourite Dawie van der Walt, while Anders Hansen is at six-under.

Gasquet cleared of dope charge
TENNIS: Richard Gasquet last night spoke of his relief after being cleared of any wrongdoing by the Court of Arbitration for Sport over his doping charge.

The Frenchman, 23, was handed a provisional 12-month ban by ITF after testing positive for cocaine, but an ITF panel were told how the substance got into his system inadvertently after kissing a woman in a Miami nightclub.

“I am totally relieved,” he said. “I went through a nightmare for eight months.”
