Durham set imposing total
CRICKET: Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dale Benkenstein both added centuries as Durham continued their charge to the County Championship division one title yesterday.

The pair put on 203 for the fourth wicket at Durham declared on 648-5 against closest title rivals Nottinghamshire at the Riverside.

Opener Michael Di Venuto could only add five to his overnight 214no. Durham need just 11 points to claim a second successive title.

Notts ended the day on 65-2 in reply.

Hansen leads in Cologne
GOLF: Dane Soren Hansen showed his Ryder Cup credentials with a seven-under-par 65 to take the overnight lead in the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Cologne, Germany.

Hansen leads England’s Chris Wood by one shot with Ross Fisher one of four players a further shot adrift.

O’Brien colt out of St Leger
RACING: Ante-post favourite Age of Aquarius is out of Saturday’s final Classic of the season, the Ladbrokes St Leger.

The Aidan O’Brien colt did not feature in yesterday’s final declarations for the Doncaster race after failing to convince his stable of his fitness.

O’Brien confirmed: “We were not 100 per cent happy with him after his canter this morning and decided not to declare him.”

Kite Wood now leads the market.

Dempsey lands world gold
SAILING: Nick Dempsey, the Skandia Team GBR windsurfer was crowned the 2009 RS:X world champion at the Weymouth yesterday.

The Athens bronze medallist clinched his first world championship title after a hard-fought regatta and is now many people’s hot favourite for Olympic gold at the same venue in three years time.
