Khan faces Salita in title defence
BOXING: Amir Khan will make the first defence of his WBA light-welterweight title against Dmitriy Salita at the Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle, on Saturday 5 December.

Khan, who won the title after out-pointing Andreas Kotelnik in July, takes on the American, who has won 30 and drawn one of his 31 professional fights.

Promoter Frank Warren said: “Salita’s got a great record, he’s unbeaten and carries a big punch and of course he will pose a threat to Amir, but Amir’s a world-class fighter and has to deal with these challengers.”

Williams returns as world No1
TENNIS: Serena Williams reclaimed the world No1 spot with victory over Ekaterina Makarova in the second round of the China Open.

Williams, 28, beat the Russian 6-3, 6-2 and leapfrogs Dinara Safina, who suffered a shock defeat to Chinese wild card Zhang Shuai.

Defending champion Jelena Jankovic also crashed out, to China’s Peng Shuai.

Toffees’ Baxter on bail
FOOTBALL: Everton’s teenage striker Jose Baxter has been released on police bail after being arrested for possession of cannabis and counterfeit money.

Baxter, 17, was arrested along with a 29 and 34-year-old man in the Kirkby area of Merseyside on Monday.

“All three men have been released on police bail pending further inquiries,” a force spokesman said.

O’Sullivan cruises through
SNOOKER: World No1 Ronnie O’Sullivan moved into the second round of the China Open with a 5-3 win over Jamie Burnett.

He now plays world champion John Higgins in the last 16.
