Murray pulls out of Shanghai
TENNIS: Britain’s Andy Murray has been forced to pull out of another tournament by a persistent wrist injury.

The world No3 has withdrawn from next week’s Shanghai Masters 1000 and does not expect to play until next month’s Valencia Open with one eye on the prestigious season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Williams in, but Maguire out
SNOOKER: Resurgent Mark Williams moved into the last eight of the Grand Prix with a 5-2 victory over seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry.

World No2 Stephen Maguire crashed out, however, losing 5-1 to China’s Ding Jinhui, who now takes on veteran Peter Ebdon, 5-3 victor over Mark Davis. Robert Milkins also thrashed Mark King 5-1.

Rookie Quiros upstages Garcia
GOLF: Unheralded Manuel Quiros upstaged Ryder Cup star Sergio Garcia as home favourites led the charge on the first day of the Madrid Masters.

Quiros, ranked 1,076 in the world, carded a superb 62 to lead on 10 under par, with Garcia two shots behind and England’s Oliver Fisher trailing a further stroke adrift.
