Pooley makes history for Britain
CYCLING: Great Britain’s Emma Pooley won the time trial at the Road World Championships in Australia.

The 27-year-old Londoner, who won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, is the first British woman to win the event. She said: “Now I get to wear the world champion’s jersey with the stripes for a whole year.”

Gerrard out of Dutch clash
FOOTBALL: Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been rested for tonight’s Europa League trip to Utrecht.

Defender Daniel Agger is also missing with a groin injury but misfiring striker Fernando Torres, who has just one goal this season, is included in Roy Hodgson’s 20-man squad.

Beckham won’t go on loan again
FOOTBALL: Former England captain David Beckham does not expect to join a European club on loan when LA Galaxy’s season finishes.

Beckham spent the last two winters at AC Milan but he said: “I’ll never say never, but after my injury I need to really focus on getting my full fitness back.”

Hamilton refuses to play safe
FORMULA ONE: Britain’s Lewis Hamilton has vowed not to change his aggressive driving style despite failing to finish the last two races.

The 2008 world champion has just four races to close a 20-point gap on title leader Mark Webber, and he said: “I’m a racer. I always race my heart out, and nothing will ever change that.”
