Thousands mourn Higgins
SNOOKER: Past and present snooker stars gathered to remember former world champion Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins at his funeral in Belfast yesterday.

Stephen Hendry, Ken Doherty and Joe Swail joined the mourners at the service in St Anne’s Cathedral as hundreds more gathered outside.

The 1972 and 1982 world champion died last month aged 61 following a long battle against throat cancer.

England name unchanged side
CRICKET: England have named an unchanged squad as they go in search of a sixth straight Test victory in the second Test with Pakistan at Edgbaston on Friday. Tim Bresnan keeps his place in the 12 which claimed a 354-run victory at Trent Bridge on Sunday. He keeps out fit-again Yorkshire paceman Ajmal Shahzad.

Euro champ Ennis eyes 2012
ATHLETICS: Jessica Ennis believes Great Britain’s success at the European Championships bodes well for the nation’s medal hopes at London 2012.

Hepathlete Ennis was one of six British gold medalists in a record 19-medal haul in Barcelona last week. She said: “To have won so many medals here is only going to give us confidence going into next year and the Olympics.”
