Trains across the whole South West network are facing severe disruption after a person was hit by a train earlier today.

The operator warned that trains could be “cancelled, delayed by up to 90 minutes or revised at short notice”, with disruption expected to last well into rush hour.

Originally the group had estimated the problems would be resolved by 7pm, but has now pushed this back to 9pm.

The incident took place between Wimbledon and Surbiton. Although lines have now reopened, customers are being advised to use alternative routes home.

“Due to the key location of this incident and time that the lines were blocked we expect disruption to continue throughout the evening,” South West Trains said.

“We anticipate having our suburban (inner London) running on time from 16:00, our mainline (long distance) services should running normally from approximately 19:00.

“Trains are likely to be busier than usual as we have been unable to run a full service this afternoon.”

Tickets are being accepted on London buses across South West London, as well as District Line services between Wimbledon and Central London, Northern Line services between Morden and Central London and Bakerloo Line services from Paddington to Waterloo.

They can also be used on Thameslink services between Wimbledon and Central London, First Great Western services from Exeter St Davids to London Paddington and Southern services on routes from Epsom and Portsmouth into London Victoria.

Here are the details of which routes are affected:

London Waterloo – Exeter/Salisbury – These trains will be running between Basingstoke and Exeter/Salisbury Only.
London Waterloo – Hampton Court – These trains will not run.
London Waterloo – Woking (Stopping) – There is a reduced service in operation.

Our suburban (inner London) routes that are not mentioned above will have a train service but this will be delayed and will also be subject to service alterations.

Stations Unserved

Thames Ditton, Hampton Court, Berrylands, Esher and Hersham.

Some other stations will have a significantly reduced train service.
