Toshiba unveils groundbreaking new portable devices
IT may be all about the iPad at the moment, but Toshiba has shown this week that companies other than Apple are still out there breaking new ground in the world of things portable, personal and touchscreen. On Monday it unveiled three pieces of kit that will have tech fans drooling. First off is the rather beautiful looking Libretto W100 (right), the first dual touchscreen device to run Windows 7. Fold its two 7-inch screens out flat and you can split content across both screens horizontally or vertically. In clamshell form the lower screen can bring up virtual keyboards or Toshiba’s nifty Lifespace programme.
Meanwhile, the sleek AC100 (far right) is a stylish notebook cleverly incorporating smartphone tech. It weighs just 870g with a body that’s just 14mm thick, and runs on the Android 2.1 platform with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in – a very useful machine for those who need to work on the move. The screen is 10.1 inches with built-in webcam and microphone, and you also get a variety of connection ports for docking with other devices.
Also launched was a new ultra-light laptop aimed specifically at business users, the Portege R700, with a hyper-efficient air-cooling system and a body weighing just 1.3kg. That’s due in July while the Libretto and the AC100 should be in shops in August. Prices are yet to be confirmed. www.toshiba.co.uk
