Builder Sir Robert McAlpine has been sued for close to £20m over alleged defects on parts of the affordable homes making up part of the redevelopment of Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.

Newlon Housing Trust has launched a £19.2m lawsuit against the builder for breach of contract and negligence. The social landlord claims several construction defects forced them to carry out “extensive” remedial works at the development – and that several of these defects still remain.

These include “persistent roof leaks”, “extreme coldness” and broken taps, according to reports in trade magazine Construction News:

As well as numerous snagging items, more major items including roof leaks and problems with the extractor fan system were noted and reported at or very soon after the time when the flats began to be occupied.

A spokesman for the builder has said:

Sir Robert McAlpine is rigorously defending this claim; however, as the litigation is ongoing we can provide no further details at this time.

The Ashburton Triangle affordable homes built around the stadium were developed in partnership with Arsenal, and Sir Robert McAlpine, which also built the Emirates Stadium, was fired from the property development in 2012.
