THE family of Sir Bobby Robson have said they are “humbled and overwhelmed” by the public response to his death on Friday.

The County Durham-born former England manager lost his long battle against cancer at the age of 76.

Around 15,000 supporters have visited Newcastle’s St James’ Park over the weekend to lay flowers, banners, shirts and scarves.

Sir Bobby’s widow, Lady Elsie Robson attended the shrine with her sons Andrew and David last night, stopping to read some of the thousands of messages and tributes to the legend.

Similar tributes have also taken place at Sir Bobby’s statue outside his other former club, Ipswich Town.

A spokeswoman for the family said: “The family is humbled and overwhelmed by the public response to his passing.”
