The UK chief executive of engineering firm Siemens, Juergen Maier, said today he is stepping down from his role early.

Maier, who has been with the company for 33 years, said today he was retiring to improve his work-life balance.

In a blog post Maier said: “Decisions to leave great companies and teams of people are not easy and after 33 years of working at Siemens,  this was indeed one of those very tough decisions for me.”

He added: “The reason to retire now is purely a matter of life balance.”

Maier said: “Early retirement feels right at this point, to re-charge my energy to then take on some exciting new opportunities to support UK industry.”

He will be succeeded as UK chief executive by Carl Ennis, the company’s UK and Ireland head of product and system sales, at the end of the year.

Maier was appointed chief executive in July 2014 and had been a member of Siemens UK executive board since 2008.

In 2019 he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to British-German relations.

In April, Maier warned that the lack of certainty around Brexit risked the UK’s relationship with Europe and was a threat to investment in the UK economy.

“We are at a point of crisis right at this moment in time,” he told the BBC. “We need to find a way forward so we can re-establish that trust to give us the confidence to invest here again.”
