Siemens' chief executive, Roland Aurich, has said that the UK’s pledge to produce 30 per cent of UK energy from renewable sources by 2020 has given certainty to how the company “goes forward” with investments.

Speaking on Radio 4’s Today Programme, Aurich said we “need to make sure we combat climate change”.

Siemens is going to invest £160m in wind turbine production in the UK, doubling its original plans.

This morning, it was also announced that the German manufacturing giant is going to invest £310m building the UK’s first purpose-built factory for manufacturing offshore wind turbine blades in Hull, creating 1,000 jobs in the process.

Associated British Ports, which is collaborating with Siemens on the project, is investing £150m.
