Sherwood hits out at Van Gaal over interest in his Tottenham job

TOTTENHAM manager Tim Sherwood last night made plain his displeasure at comments from Holland coach Louis van Gaal stating his desire to manage in the Premier League next season.

Sherwood signed an 18-month contract in December, but has failed to reinvigorate Spurs’ season since succeeding Andre Villas-Boas and Van Gaal is favourite with the bookmakers to be the club’s next permanent boss.

Van Gaal’s contract with Holland expires at the end of this summer’s World Cup and the 62-year-old said this week: “My ambition is to coach a top team in the Premier League. I have never experienced the atmosphere in England.”

And Sherwood, whose team bid to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit in tonight’s Europa League last-16 clash with Benfica, is unimpressed with Van Gaal’s apparent interest in his job.

“I’m sure he’ll get his opportunity, he’s been shouting loud enough for it,” said Sherwood.

“He’s obviously destined to want to manage in England.

“My future’s out of my hands. I believe I’ll be here next year. I’m planning for next season. The players are playing for their futures.”

Defender Jan Vertonghen is suspended tonight, while eight other first team players, including striker Emmanuel Adebayor and central defender Younes Kaboul, are ruled out through injury.

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has been left in London and seven players yet to make their Spurs debuts have flown to Lisbon.
