Scottish police decide not to use codename ‘Operation Bunter’ for Johnson visit
Scottish police have U-turned on a plan to codename Boris Johnson’s trip north of the border as “Operation Bunter” out of fears that it would offend the Prime Minister.
The name was a homage to chubby fictional schoolboy Billy Bunter who appeared in novels, television series’, stage plays and comic strips throughout the 20th century.
The Sun reports that the codename was changed in a bid to avoid a row with Downing Street.
A Police Scoltand insider told the Sun: “But several people pointed out the foolishness of calling it after a fat, posh English public schoolboy – not least given the PM is known for being a bit portly.”
“Operation Aeration was selected as the alternative.
“But I’m not sure moving away from Billy Bunter to a name that implies the PM is full of air is much of an improvement.”
Billy Bunter was first created by Charles Hamilton in 1908 and appeared in a weekly paper until 1940
He is depicted as a attending the fictional Kent public school Greyfriars.
