Southampton have terminated the contract of their club record signing Dani Osvaldo, who cost £15m and made just 13 appearances for the Premier League club.

The Argentina-born Italy forward has been released two years before the end of his deal, having spent much of his two seasons on the books of the Saints out on loan at Juventus, Inter Milan and Boca Juniors.

Osvaldo, 29, was shipped out less than six months after joining from Roma following a fracas with team-mate Jose Fonte, in which the striker head-butted the Southampton captain.

He scored just three times in his 13 appearances, meaning that, excluding wages, he cost the south coast outfit more than £1m per appearance, £17,500 per minute and in excess of £5m per goal.
