London mayor Sadiq Khan has travelled to Paris in a bid to secure a partnership with the French capital in the aftermath of Brexit.

Khan was invited to France by Anne Hidalgo, the Parisian mayor, for the anniversary of the liberation of the city from Nazi forces.

City PM previously revealed City Hall was in talks over a bilateral deal with Paris, with deputy mayor for business Rajesh Agrawal mooting more unified support for startups either side of the Channel.

And now, Khan has admitted he is hoping to promote opportunities for innovation in both London and Paris, and hoping to work closely with Europe on business, skills and sectors such as technology.

“London and Paris are two of the greatest commercial and cultural cities in the world and we have much to gain from working even closer together post-referendum,” he said.

Khan will spend Thursday in the city, and will discuss plans to tackle pollution with Hidalgo – City Hall has made London's air quality a top priority under Khan, and is planning to pedestrianise Oxford Street in a bid to tackle toxic emissions.

He will also hold meetings with leading Parisian business figures to discuss Brexit.
