Sadiq Khan launches extension to CS6 cycle route between Farringdon and King’s Cross
London mayor Sadiq Khan has opened a major new extension to cycle superhighway 6 (CS6) this morning that connects cyclists from Elephant and Castle to north London through the heart of the city.
Transport for London (TfL) and Islington and Camden councils have extended the CS6 between Farringdon and King’s Cross, passing through Blackfriars station. The CS6 is now 5km in length.
After an initial consultation by previous mayor Boris Johnson the CS6 now contains signal-controlled cycle crossings, additional pedestrian crossings and a segregated cycle track.
Khan said the CS6, which cost TfL £11m, was vital given London’s growing population and the damaging effects of air pollution.
He added: “I’m pleased we’re continuing our close relationship with Camden and Islington – boroughs who are committed to improving air quality and the health of their residents, and improving road safety for everyone.”
Earlier this month TfL clashed with Westminster council in court over a separate cycle superhighway, the CS11, from Swiss Cottage to Oxford Circus.
The council, which has already blocked the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street, also vetoed the CS11. It said TfL wanted to press ahead with the project without assessing the impact on traffic and residents.
