Ryanair wants to undercut package holiday market with launch of Ryanair Holidays

Watch out Thomas Cook? Ryanair has launched a package holiday service, called, you guessed it: "Ryanair Holidays".

This forms part of its master plan to become the "Amazon of air travel", according to the company.

It is offering its 119m customers flights, accommodation and transfer packages, partnering with Spain-based tour operator Logitravel and accommodation provider World2Meet.

It launches in the UK, Ireland and Germany today, with other markets to follow next year.

Ryanair's chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs said his firm wants to "transform the package holiday market".

"Consumers have been paying too much for package holidays for years and more and more want to put their own packages together themselves," he said.

Ryanair customers will be able to choose from a range of hotels throughout the Mediterranean and Europe's capital cities.

The company said it plans to undercut rivals by forgoing commissions often charged by holiday firms.

The firm has also launched Ryanair Car Hire and Ryanair Rooms this year, and it said the reception these have had proved customers were coming to Ryanair for "services and products other than flights".

Since the Brexit vote, Ryanair's chief executive Michael O'Leary has said the airline will focus expansion away from its central base in the UK.

It recently announced it will be opening a base at Frankfurt Airport making it the first of the low-fare airlines to do so.

The Irish airline will have two Boeing 737s in Frankfurt – an investment of $200m (£162m) for the company – along with four new routes to Alicante, Faro, Malaga and Palma. There will be 28 weekly flights, with the expectation that Ryanair will deliver over 400,000 customers per year through Frankfurt airport.
