Rugby World Cup 2015 tickets most expensive but also best-selling in history

This year's Rugby World Cup has broken the record for tickets sold, surpassing the 2.25m sold for the tournament in France eight years ago.

Nearly all of the 2.45m tickets originally put on sale have been sold, although more expensive tickets are still available for 32 matches including England's 10 October meeting with Uruguay at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

Not only is the tournament the best-selling in Rugby World Cup history – it has also been named the most expensive sporting event ever.

The average cost of a ticket for the event is more than £100 while an average England ticket costs £167.5.

A recent Mail on Sunday investigation found that the average price for last year's football World Cup cost £94.4 per seat, while tickets for the 2012 Olympics cost £87.5 per seat.

Yet the high cost has clearly not put rugby fans off, as there are now no tickets available through official channels for any of England's potential knock-out games.

Fans who missed out through the official ballot are being warned against purchasing tickets elsewhere with counterfeiters selling fake tickets at extortionate prices.

Even secondary ticket website such as StubHub and Viagogo are selling tickets for four figure sums.
