MANCHESTER CITY (5) vs SCUNTHORPE (1)

STRIKER Roque Santa Cruz opened his account for Manchester City as the Blues booked their place in the quarter-finals in emphatic fashion.

Scunthorpe put up initial resistance, Jonathan Forte equalising after Stepehen Ireland had given the home side the lead. But further goals from £18m summer signing Santa Cruz, Joleon Lescott, Carlos Tevez and Michael Johnson buried the Championship outfit.

Midfielder Ireland took just two and a half minutes to score, gathering a Shaun Wright-Phillips pass and stroking past Joe Murphy.

But City were embarrassed on 26 minutes when a one-two set up Forte for an easy finish.

Santa Cruz soon reasserted the home side’s superiority, however, and struck a long-awaited first goal in City colours, heading home Pablo Zabaleta’s cross.

Lescott met a Wright-Phillips corner for the third and Tevez finished a cross from substitute Vladimir Weiss before Johnson capped the goal-fest with a thumping 25-yard drive.
