GOLF: Sam Torrance carded a three-under-par final round of 67 at the Senior Open Championship but could not prevent America’s Loren Roberts from taking the title.

Former Ryder Cup captain and City PM columnist Torrance finished fifth on 10 under par, one stroke behind Bernhard Langer and two adrift of Roberts, Fred Funk and Mark McNulty.

Roberts, who also won the title in 2006, claimed victory at Sunningdale yesterday on the third extra hole of a three-man play-off.

Elsewhere, Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez sank five birdies in the last six holes to finish on 10 under par and win the SAS Masters in Malmo by two shots from Welshman Jamie Donaldson.
