Asset management and advisory group River and Mercantile has appointed deputy boss James Barham as chief executive.

Barham will replace current chief executive Mike Faulkner who will step down to become the group’s head of macro strategies and innovation.

Faulkner was formerly the chief executive of P-Solve until its 2014 merger with River and Mercantile Asset Management – the firm founded by Barham.

“It is a great honour to take on the chief executive mantle from Mike,” Barham said.

“Aside from a long-term friendship, we have always been indistinguishably aligned in terms of our ambitions for River and Mercantile and share an equal passion for its continued growth and development.”

Barham served in the Army with the Royal Welch Fusiliers before joining Shandwick Consultants in 1989.

He was part of a team that founded and floated Liontrust Asset Management in 1995 before joining Intermediate Capital Group as sales and marketing director.

Barham went on to found River and Mercantile Asset Management in 2006.

Faulkner said: “James and I have worked together for many years growing the business to the successful franchise it is today, and I know he is best placed to take on the role of group chief executive from me.

“We will continue to work closely together in growing the business as we have always done.”
