Consumers have long discussed the craftiest ways to negotiate the best deal from their broadband providers.

But new research from check and challenge site Ismybillfair.com has revealed how likely broadband providers are to cut you a better deal.

According to the survey, Virgin Media is the worst offender, with only 32 per cent of respondents expressing satisfaction at the company’s response to their appeal.

Yorkshire based provider Plusnet also fared badly, with an approval rating of just 55 per cent.

By contrast, Talktalk boasted a satisfaction rating of 80 per cent, with BT and Sky following close behind.

Provider Customers happy with response (%) Customers unhappy with response (%) Didn't even receive response (%)
Talktalk 80 10 10
BT 77 12 11
Sky 75 12 13
Plusnet 55 12 33
Virgin Media 32 34 34

Alex Perrin, Ismybillfair.com chief executive, said: “Since we launched our service, almost all providers have stated that their aim is to respond to every customer who has challenged them, and to give them a fairer deal for staying. For the majority of customers, that has been the case.

“Virgin Media have been given the same opportunity as other service providers, but has chosen to respond with a standard letter which requires their customers to call them directly to negotiate.”

A Plusnet spokesperson said: “We believe in making things as simple and fair as possible for all our customers.

“This is one of the key reasons we were the first in the industry to offer end of contract account reviews with our fixed price contracts, allowing customers to discuss their needs as they approach the end of their contract.”

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “In Ofcom’s most recent broadband customer satisfaction survey, Virgin Media customers were most likely to be satisfied with their service.

“We offer a range of great deals for our existing customers and are always happy to speak to them to discuss their services to ensure they’re on the best package that meets their needs.”
