Renault has named its new chairman and chief executive following a board meeting just hours after the resignation of Carlos Ghosn.

The French car manufacturer named former Michelin head Jean-Dominique Senard as chairman and interim boss Thierry Bollore as chief executive.

The appointments mark a separation of the two roles, which were both formerly held by Ghosn. Senard and Bollore were tipped for the positions ahead of today’s board meeting.

Renault said Senard will also head up the alliance with Nissan and Mitsubishi.

“The board expresses its confidence in the new leadership and wishes it every success in its mission,” Renault said in a statement.

The appointments come just hours after it emerged Ghosn had resigned his management positions amid the scandal surrounding his arrest on charges of financial misconduct.

French finance minister Bruno Le Maire told Bloomberg earlier today that Ghosn had notified the company of his resignation last night.

Ghosn has been in detention since his arrest on 19 November on charges of underreporting his salary and transferring personal losses to Nissan.

Earlier this week a Tokyo court rejected Ghosn’s bail application, meaning he is likely to remain behind bars until his trial, which may not begin for a number of months.
