RELEGATION threatened Queens Park Rangers have emerged as contenders to hijack Newcastle’s bid for Marseille striker Loic Remy.

The France international was set to have a medical in Newcastle yesterday after a fee in the region of £8m had been agreed between the clubs on Sunday night as Magpies manager Alan Pardew looks to replace Demba Ba, who joined Chelsea this month.

But it appears the 26-year-old is considering a change of heart and a move to QPR after the west London club matched Newcastle’s bid.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp revealed he failed to secure a meeting with Remy while in France watching the forward a week ago but Remy is now expected to undergo a medical at QPR today before the Hoops travel to face West Brom in an FA Cup third-round replay.

The former Lyon and Nice striker has 27 goals for Marseille in 68 appearances and has won 17 caps for France, scoring four goals.

Redknapp admits he needs at least three new signings in the January transfer window as QPR lie bottom of the Premier League and five points adrift from safety.
