Red kit boost but pitch fears rise
ENGLAND have been handed a good omen for their crunch match against Slovenia after it emerged they will wear lucky red.
The Three Lions wore red shirts in their finest hour – the 1966 World Cup final victory over West Germany – and will don an all red kit this afternoon in Port Elizabeth.
England are unbeaten on the four occasions they have worn red from head to toe, most recently beating Belgium 3-1 in a 1970 friendly.
However, there was bad news yesterday when the full extent of damage to the pitch at the Nelson Mandela Stadium became clearer.
Groundsmen patched up the goalmouth with fresh turf, leaving it uneven, while there are concerns about excessive use of sand.
