A new whisky has been launched today that would leave Don Draper scrabbling for a dram – and his wallet.

The world's number two whisky brand, Scotch giant Glenlivet, has unveiled the second release from its luxury Winchester collection, a 50-year-old Vintage 1966 worth an eye-watering £20,000 a bottle and created by then-master distiller Robert Arthur.

Just 100 bottles of the single malt "pinnacle of the Glenlivet range" will be available in Harrods, following the company's last 100-bottle release of Vintage 1964 in 2014.

"The trademark soft, sweet, sumptuous complexity is layered by a delicate spice – a teasing intermingling of cinnamon and liquorice – and offers an exceptionally long, smooth finish, with a pleasing hint of dryness," the Glenlivet's taste notes describe.

"The release of Vintage 1966 marks another milestone for the Glenlivet Winchester Collection. Casks of this age and quality are such a rare thing these days, that the resulting single malt is literally liquid history in a glass," said Alan Winchester, master distiller at Glenlivet.

"I'm immensely proud to release this wonderful whisky, which has been cared for and crafted over generations."

Scotch exports rose for the first time since 2013 in the first half of this year, adding momentum to a sector that already adds £5bn to the UK's economy.
