Put colour back in your pocket

SINCE men everywhere fell under the spell of Don Draper, a neat white strip in the breast pocket has been a de rigueur suit accessory. It helped too that the crisp lines and white on grey tones suited fashion’s move towards sober asceticism. But hey, summer’s here, the sun’s out, and such sombre restraint is looking a bit, dare we say it, boring.

It’s time to bring back colour. Chose a patterned silk square that picks up on shades in your tie or shirt without being too direct a match – it should look spontaneous rather than overly planned. For a tidy look, go for a triangular fold. For something with a bit more panache, lay the square out flat and pick it up in the centre, letting it hang down. Make a finger and thumb hole with your other hand and pull it through, then roughly fold it in half. Ease the square into your breast pocket with the fold at the top, and ruffle it until it looks as though you just whipped it out of the drawer and stuffed it breezily in your pocket on your way out the door
