Property of the Week: Ingleton Street in Stockwell used to be a garage – now it’s a £750,000 party pad
Thirsty punters sitting outside the Crown and Anchor on Brixton Road often stop and stare at the building opposite on Ingleton Street.
Who can blame them? It looks like someone has attempted to hide an architect’s studio by covering it in doilies.
“It’s a self-confessed vanity project,” says Marlon Lloyd Malcolm, director of sales at selling agent Lurot Brand, “and the developer spent a lot of money making sure it was just right.”
The developer in question actually bought the freehold of the aforementioned public house, but spotted an oppotunity to create a residence out of a garage tucked away in a small side street next door.
To make it seem more homely, he pedestrianised the street and built an extra level on top of the garage. Painted bright white inside with matching monochrome furnishings, it’s a stylish shell that serves as a blank canvas for a potential buyer.
The shell, however, is pretty snazzy and probably not to everyone’s taste. Architect Horden Cherry Lee has put its signature contemporary touch on the property, smothering the light within with a series of aluminum panels.
The tear-shaped perforations are actually leaves, inspired by the views over Slade Gardens from the floor above. Each one was carved into the metal by a water jet cutter for maximum precision, framing the house with a speckled glow at night.
The ground floor comprises three rooms – a master bedroom, a shared bathroom and a flexible room that’s big enough to be used as a second bedroom – then a narrow wooden staircase leads to a bright, open plan kitchen, dining and living space with a skylight. Spanning just 700sqft, Malcolm says appliances, electric blinds and furniture are thrown in, but the dog, unfortunately, is not.
Still, he says “it’s near on impossible to find a freehold one bedroom property of this size and spec in London” and he expects it to go to a City worker in need of a pied-a-terre, or a younger couple with help from the Bank of Mum and Dad.
With a pub next door, a park on the other side and all the nightlife that nearby Brixton has to offer, it’s a perforated party pad in the making.
