Here's how crazy Prime Day was for Amazon.

Sales on the shopping day that's now bigger than Black Friday for the retailer rocketed 60 per cent on last year, when it's estimated sales hit around the $400m, according to analysts.

Now in its second year, Amazon Prime vice president Greg Greeley said: “We want to thank our tens of millions of members around the world for making this the biggest day in the history of Amazon. We hope you had as much fun as we did. After yesterday’s results, we’ll definitely be doing this again.”

Shares in Amazon already shot up ahead of the day as analysts forecast it would be a lucrative one. It helped Amazon surpass Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway to become the fifth biggest company by market capitalisation in the world on Monday.

The day was a big one for Amazon's devices too, such as the Fire TV Stick streaming device, Kindle and Fire tablet, although it has not released exact sales figures for them or overall. The Fire TV Stick was the best selling device globally.

Amazon did not share, however, the number of people who signed up to become Prime members (at a cost of £79 per year) to take advantage of the deals.

It did reveal that it sold more than 90,000 TVs and two million toys, while the number of orders made via its mobile app were more than twice as many as last year.

Shares in Amazon opened slightly up, 0.59 per cent, at $752.62 per share.
