Poulter’s on song in Hong Kong as McDowell aims to end the season in Dubai as Europe’s top dog
ENGLAND’S Ian Poulter claims he’s no longer concentrating on his world ranking after his victory in the UBS Hong Kong Open.
The 34-year-old shot a second round 60 and never looked back, carding a solid 67 on the final day to finish one stroke ahead of Simon Dyson and Italian Matteo Manassero.
Poulter caused controversy two years ago when he claimed he was the only serious threat to Tiger Woods’ supremacy. And although he is confident of progressing further, he stopped short of making any bold statements about his ability to challenge the game’s elite.
He said:“I’m not playing the game saying, ‘I’m going to get to No1’. I tried that once before and it didn’t work. I think I’ll just try winning next week and see how high I can go.”
Meanwhile, Graeme McDowell is second to Martin Kaymer in the Race to Dubai after finishing fifth in Hong Kong and he is confident he is in the perfect frame of mind as he bids to finish the season as Europe’s No1.
“I’m within touching distance now of next week,” he said. “I’m feeling really good about my game.”
