Poulter makes promising start at US Open
ENGLAND’S Ian Poulter has a first Major title in his sights after bagging a share of the clubhouse lead on day one of the US Open.
Poulter was among a clutch of early pace-setters who shot one-under-par rounds of 70 at Pebble Beach in California yesterday. Joining him were Canada’s Mike Weir and South Korea’s KJ Choi, the latter having slipped from three-under-par earlier in his opening round.
Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen and Italy’s Edoardo Molinari also wasted promising starts as cool conditions made fast greens more treacherous.
Poulter’s countryman Luke Donald signed for a 71, but Ireland’s Padraig Harrington could only manage a 73. Five-time runner-up Phil Mickelson let a good start dissolve and ended up with a disappointing four-over-par 75.
England’s Paul Casey made a great start late last night, reaching two under after five holes, as Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods got their challenges under way.
