Apple iPhone 6s launch: Pope Francis visit to the US to delay deliveries of new smartphone in Washington, New York City and Philadelphia

Unwitting Apple customers, eagerly awaiting the arrival of their brand new iPhone 6s on Friday, may just have to wait a little bit longer after a bigger arrival to the US: Pope Francis.

The Pope's security arrangements are – as one would expect – going to block up the streets, causing major disruption. And not even iOS 9 can stop it.

Deliveries are expected to be affected in Washington DC as well as New York City and Philadelphia are expected to be delayed by up to a week. The leader of the Catholic world is touring these three cities between 22 and 27 September.

UPS, the delivery service, issued a statement to say that it is "implementing contingency plans to minimise service impacts", but expects a number of areas to be affected, with "no pick-ups or deliveries" during the dates that the Pope is in town.

And that could upset a lot of people: Apple has forecast sales of the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus to be record-breaking.

“As many customers noticed, the online demand for iPhone 6s Plus has been exceptionally strong and exceeded our own forecasts for the preorder period.

"We are working to catch up as quickly as we can, and we will have iPhone 6s Plus as well as iPhone 6s units available at Apple retail stores when they open next Friday,” Apple said.
