  • Ofwat blocks nine water firms from using customer cash for hefty bonuses

    Ofwat said it would use new powers to prevent customers paying for £6.8m in payouts across the industry, 73 per cent of the total.

    There is currently no statutory requirement to pay compensation to customers when supply interruptions occur, although some voluntarily offer payouts at varying rates.

    Plans to cap water bill increases at £19 per year would prevent suppliers from raising enough cash to improve performance, Water UK said.

    Severn Trent described the claim as "highly inaccurate and not reflective at all of how we work," in a statement following the ruling.
