Pearce lifts lid on Fabio discipline

ENGLAND Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce believes the secret of Fabio Capello’s success with the senior team is a “two strikes and you’re out” regime.

Renowned disciplinarian Capello inherited a squad that was labelled complacent after missing out on Euro 2008. But the Italian has already ensured England’s qualification to next summer’s World Cup, with eight wins out of eight. And Pearce, who is part of the coaching staff for the senior squad, says Capello’s no-nonsense approach is the key.

“He treats the latest one in the squad to John Terry to David Beckham all the same,” said Pearce.

“If you step out of line, you’ll be told. If you step out of line twice, he won’t tell you again — I think you go. It’s a level playing field and footballers respond to that. I think they respond to that more than anything.

“They like things to be fair, and he’s created that environment where it is fair and even.”
