Championship club Derby County has appointed an English former Real Madrid assistant as their new head coach on a three-year contract.

Paul Clement left the Bernabeu following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti last week after two seasons in the Spanish capital. The 43-year-old former PE teacher has worked under Ancelotti since the Italian joined Chelsea in 2007, where Clement was first team coach.

After missing out on the play-offs on the final day of the Championship season, Derby dismissed former England manager Steve McClaren.

It has been an honour to have worked with Carlo at the Number 1 Club in the World. Thank you to all the Players, Staff and Fans. Hala Madrid

Derby chief executive Sam Rush commented:

Paul is one of the most in-demand coaches in world football. I am delighted that he has agreed to join Derby. He is hugely respected, has exceptional relationships throughout football and tremendous coaching experience at some of the very best clubs in Europe.

He is the perfect appointment at the next stage of Derby County's development and we are looking forward to the coming season with a great deal of optimism.
