Oldest ever Chivas Scotch commands 21k price tag at Sotheby’s auction

A bottle of Chivas’s oldest ever Scotch whisky has fetched £21,780 at a Sotheby’s auction in London, one of four limited edition bottles made to celebrate Manchester United’s 1968 European Cup victory.

The bottle, containing the oldest whisky ever made by the Highlands-based producer, is the only one of the four that has been put up for sale, and all proceeds are being donated to the club’s charity, the Manchester United foundation.

Four bottles of the Scotch were made to commemorate the four goals scored by the Manchester United team in the 1968 final against Portuguese team Benfica.

One of the bottles was presented to Manchester United fan in a social media competition and another put on display in the team’s museum, before being sold at an end of season event next year. The final one will be put on display in Chivas’s distillery in Speyside, Scotland.

John Shiels, chief executive of Manchester United Foundation said: “We are extremely thankful to Chivas for its support and recognition of the Foundation through this auction.

“This generous donation allows us to continue delivering our wide range of programmes to people across Greater Manchester and will make a huge difference to those who need it most.”

Sandy Hyslop, Chivas director of blending, said: “The buyer of this bottle has got their hands on an iconic piece of history – this is the oldest Chivas blend ever created.”
