Beautiful things: Maritime clocks and parrot lamps

The romantic image of the seabound adventurer telling the time from the position of the sun was rendered obsolete by clocks like these. But what we lost in romance, we gained in style and craftsmanship. Wempe’s Senator Brass clock is a technical masterpiece, with an eleven-jewel Swiss rate regulator for ultimate precision. And that’s just the half of it: the exquisitely-crafted kiln-fired lacquer face makes this one of the most stylish maritime instruments on the market, while the hand-cast brass casing, polished to perfection, would be a beautiful addition to any living quarters, be they at sea or on dry land.

Wempe Senator Brass, £1,095. Visit the Wempe boutique at 43-44 New Bond Street or log on to wempe.com.

Give your living room a talking point with these kitsch-but-cool, ornithological-themed table lamps

House of Hackney is a one-stop-shop for kitsch but cool homeware, selling everything from curtains to cutlery. The Shoreditch-based brand was founded in London in 2010 by husband and wife team Javvy M Royle and Frieda Gormley with a mission statement to “take the beige out of interiors”.

This pair of parrot lamps would add a splash of colour to any living room and will provide a talking point if nothing else (our office is split down the middle on them). If the parrots are a bit much for you, there are plenty of other styles to choose from, including an inordinate number of pineapple-shaped ones.

The parrot lamps are priced at £465 each. Visit houseofhackney.com.
