No playing around: Monopoly bins the thimble, wheelbarrow and boot tokens for the new T-rex, penguin and rubber duck

Remember the Monopoly days of the boot, thimble and wheelbarrow?

Well those days are no longer, as the three unloved tokens have got the boot from the latest edition of the board and are being replaced by a Tyrannosaurus rex, a penguin and a rubber duck which will be available in new editions from August.

And if you're up in arms about your treasured thimble getting the boot, Monopoly-maker Hasbro gave you the chance to save it… The decision follows a public vote over which tokens to save as part of its Monopoply Token Madness campaign. It drew more than 4.3m votes, because people's favourite board games are not to be messed with, obviously.

But we'll allow you a moment to grieve as these tokens were part of the traditional boards around the world and have been since the game launched in 1935.

They're not the first to get binned either. The iron made way for a furry feline in 2013.

Here's the fan-picked final line-up of Monopoly tokens going forward:

  1. Scottie dog
  2. T-rex
  3. Top hat
  4. Car
  5. Rubber ducky
  6. Cat
  7. Penguin
  8. Battleship

Well, ditching Mr. Monopoly's best friend really would've been heartless – so it's probably right the Scottie picked up first place in the votes. And showing fans are happy to go out with the old, in with the new if the proposed tokens are jazzy enough, the T-Rex took the second spot in votes, stomping its way all over the downtrodden thimble.

It was the wheelbarrow that trailed right at the bottom of the rankings with just over 60,000 votes.

"The global Monopoly community has spoken!” said Jonathan Berkowitz, senior vice president of marketing for Hasbro Gaming. “The next generation of tokens clearly represents the interests of our fans around the world and we’re proud to have our iconic game impacted by the people that feel most passionate about playing it.”
