No money, no problem: City minister John Glen gives up top-up salary
Amidst an ongoing lobbying scandal, City minister John Glen is one Tory MP who can’t be accused of lining his pockets: he has given up the salary ‘top up’ that comes with the job.
The Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Glen had had his MP’s salary added to with an extra £22,475 since taking the job in January 2018 as a Parliamentary under-Secretary of State.
In the recent reshuffle Glen was promoted to a Minister of State in the same role. That would have entitled him to a £31,680 top-up, but Glen elected instead to become an unpaid minister.
The Treasury said Glen’s decision was a “voluntary” one.
Today Glen told City PM: “I love the job and I am privileged to continue to serve in this role as a Minister of State.
“I always hoped and believed that my reward will be in heaven.”
Glen has become a well-recognised figure around the Square Mile, and has become well-liked by City grandees.
Prior to being elected to Parliament in 2010, Glen worked at Accenture and managed the firm’s relationship with the World Economic Forum.
